Nashville Predators: Took advantage of Detroit’s desperation for a forward by getting an incredible return on the Legwand trade, drop an extra goalie from their roster
Boston Bruins: Fill a whole on defense by adding Andre Meszaros, Chara’s old defensive partner in Ottawa, without losing a player from their decimated lineup
Ottawa Senators: Add a strong offensive presence in Ales Hemsky for almost nothing, and re-sign D Chris Phillips
Pittsburgh Penguins: Overpaid for Marcel Goc (same price as Ales Hemsky) and didn’t add the top flight offensive player they had hoped, and spent the whole day pursuing.
New York Islanders: Got an extremely weak return for Thomas Vanek.
New York Rangers: Made a good move by adding St. Louis but his age and what they gave up will likely result in this being a bad trade down the line.
Best Trade of the Day:
New Jersey trades F Andrei Loktionov and a conditional 3rd round pick in 2017 to Carolina for F Tuomo Ruutu. New Jersey adds a gritty player they will make them a tougher team to play against down the stretch in their playoff run, while Carolina unloads salary and adds a young player with offensive upside.
Worst Trade of the Day:
Colorado trades a 2014 2nd round pick to Calgary for G Reto Berra. Colorado gives a high pick for a backup goaltender who may be 3rd on the Colorado depth chart behind Varlamov, and JS Giguere.
